Chiaroscuro Linocut Class

In this 2-day weekend class, students will learn how to create and print a 3-color chiaroscuro print (light-to-dark) using linoleum blocks. The term chiaroscuro comes from the Italian words chiaro (meaning “clear” or “bright”) and scuro (meaning “obscure”' or “dark”).
The process involves carving 2 linoleum blocks. The resulting image, registered together and printed in two distinct colors, create a 3 color image with the white of the paper being the magic third color!
Students will carve their key image (the darkest lines/information) on the first block, learn how to ink and print this image, then transfer that image onto the second piece of linoleum to create the color block. Lastly, the class will dive into how to register the chiaroscuro blocks together and print an edition, or multiple identical prints of the same image.
Supplies: During this class, students will receive two 8 x 10" linoleum blocks, a speedball carving tool set and enough paper to print a small edition of 5.

Please come to class prepared with an idea for an image. Ideally, your image will be pretty high contrast as this will help us break the image down into the distinct highlights, mid-tones, and key blacks. We will work together to plan your image out.
