DESCRIPTION:The HSQ “Sonata Mashup” concert features duos and sona
 tas, featuring Resident Musician Patrick Doane and Andrius Zlabys. The
  evening will include a set of songs for viola and piano by Florence P
 rice, a groundbreaking African-American composer whose music blends he
 r southern roots with traditional classical studies. Marking a turning
  point in his musical style, Ravel’s “Sonata for Violin and Cello�
 �� is one of the first pieces written following Ravel’s experience a
 s an ambulance driver in World War I, and sheds his “impressionistic
 ” sound world to create a masterpiece that is both austere and symph
 onic. The program will also include Mozart’s violin sonata in E mino
 r, a work that comes from a period of turmoil in the composer’s life
  as he struggled to find employment in Paris following his mother’s 
 death. The evening will close with Franck’s magnificent sonata for v
 iolin and piano, written as a wedding gift for the famed violinist Ysa
 ye, and considered to be one of Franck’s greatest works. \nSonata M
