This class covers Bridgeport (yes, Bridgeport CT!) safety, basic metal milling operations, and offers the skills needed to use the Bridgeport Mill. A Bridgeport mill is a standard manual knee-type vertical milling machine. The reason that many people refer to a manual mill simply as a “Bridgeport” is because it’s one of the most famous brand names that’s found in most machine shops.
Participants will learn to identify the locations and function of the milling machine's E-stop and other safety mechanisms, how to quickly and easily install and remove cutting tools, proper clamping procedures, start up and speed selection sequences, accurate and safe squaring of the machine's vise, how to reference the Machinists Handbook for proper tool selection/cutting speeds/feeds, how to salvage a part if mistakes are made or dimensions come out incorrectly, and many other minor procedures that will make it possible to successfully operate a manual mill and make something useful.
Please note:
Participants must watch the following two videos before the class:
Bridgeport Vertical Milling Machine Basics
Metalworking Metrology
No previous experience required.
After successful completion of this class and the online portion of the badging process MakeHaven members will earn the Bridgeport badge.
