Fair Haven is a Diverse Community with a Rich History and a Beautiful Waterfront
CALL TO ACTION
Elm City Communities/Housing Authority of New Haven is in a fight to protect our Moving To Work (MTW) status and strongly urging all residents, supporters and partners to join us as we take action to make our voice heard. HUD is proposing changes that negatively impact the Moving To Work (MTW) program here and in 38 other communities across the country that have benefited from MTW.
We recently launched an online petition campaign on Change.org to raise awareness and organize voices to oppose HUD’s changes which, if implemented, will severely put at risk programs and services for our residents.
We want the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to know that this will have an effect on our community as a whole, not just Elm City Communities/Housing Authority of New Haven.
The Change.org petition includes a video that highlights how we have been able to innovatively utilize our MTW status to dramatically improve the lives of public housing residents and change the landscape of public housing in the City of New Haven.
In 1996, Congress passed Moving To Work (MTW)—a federal deregulation demonstration program, which allows public housing authorities to increase affordable housing choice, deliver services more cost effectively, as well as support residents to become self-sufficient through meaningful local change. Today, thirty-nine public housing authorities are designated as Moving To Work agencies by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). But HUD wants to make changes to Moving To Work that would negatively impact the thirty-nine public housing authorities, the residents they house and support, and the cities and states in which they are located.
To join us in this fight, we are simply asking for you to:
1. Please sign our petition today – click here:
2. Help us spread the word! We can get more people to learn about our fight and sign the petition if you share the link on your social networks such as Facebook and Twitter.
Together we can make our voice heard and make a difference!
