Hand Lettering 101

You can learn the “Art of Hand Lettering" using readily available, inexpensive brushes and acrylic paint. Paula will share her over 20 years of professional experience to demonstrate old school sign painter’s secrets combined with current computer software technologies. The four session workshop introduces you to basic lettering skills with a focus on font characteristics leading you then to focus on how to draw and build letter forms and numeric symbols from scratch.
Diagonal, horizontal, straight and curved strokes are fundamental to serif and san- serif typestyles which designers use to create " fonts."  Understanding the proper way to manipulate chisel shaped brushes, the novice can easily learn to create their own signage for fun or business uses. Participants will learn and practice brush technique and manipulation for hand lettering on a wood panel. 

Basic knowledge of graphic design software: Adobe Illustrator or Corel Draw is helpful as is access to a computer and printer for pattern making.  You can also choose simple silhouettes to enhance your designs.
This workshop happens over four consecutive two hour classes.  Participants will leave with a completed sign and a handout.
