Event Description

The City of New Haven has announced that they would like to receive proposals for the "re-development" of the Strong School.

The Strong School is located on Grand Avenue between Clinton Avenue and Perkins Street. It is currently being used for kindergarten and 1st grade.

The city RFP states that the desired redevelopment is residential condos or residential rental units.

The purpose of our meeting is to create a resident vision for this site. ONLY area residents are invited to this meeting. There will be no official presentation by the city. We will have a copy of the RFP.

Bring your ideas and an open mind. This is a great opportunity for our neighborhood.

Questions, call 203 668 7074.

I didn't know about this and have a pick up scheduled so depending on when they come ....
I know this can be discussed Sat. but in case I can't make it I wanted to give a possible use. What if the New Haven Adult Ed took over the building and they could have classes there for ESL,GED, general interest classes or even a combo with Parks and Rec. I know that NH adult ed is located at Ella Grasso Blvd but why not have an additional site? Something on this side of the city to accomidate the community and give more options. This could give them a way to expand there program. Wallingford has done this with there program. An art co-op like erector square might be interesting too! I just hope the existing building is kept and retro fitted for what ever .... I like seeing the boys and girls entrances. :D It's a bit of history.

Two additional notes:

1. Proposals responding to the RFP are due to the City by March 30. This does not end the conversation, it is the beginning.

2. The RFP includes pictures and graphs -- too big to send around via email BUT it cost nothing to go to the city website, register as a developer and get authorization to down load the files directly; start here: www.cityofnewhaven.com/purchasing by locating the Strong School RFP. If you know of someone wishing to get a copy of the RFP but they do not have access to the internet access they can get a copy by calling 203-946-8202 between the hours of 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM.

I don't know if I will make it, especially since I think Drew has soccer games, but, as much as I love the idea of that beautiful old building becoming residential property--I think having a condo there would be amazing--what I have always envisioned and felt we need is a community center for our neighborhood. Someplace where kids and adults can have open gym to play b-ball or participate in other indoor sports in a safe, convenient location; a place where people can volunteer to tutor kids and provide those who have "aged out" of after school care with a place to congregate that is safe and has boundaries and expectations and reinforces respect and positive, loving discipline and guidance; a place for adults and kids to receive counseling, etc. Is this even a possibility, or is the City dead set on zoning Strong School for residential use? I'd love to get a look at the RFP. Lee, can I swing by and grab a copy? Is it available online? Best to all, Libby
