Fair Haven is a Diverse Community with a Rich History and a Beautiful Waterfront
New Haven Academy is looking for a part-time youth internship coordinator; if you're interested, please contact Meredith Gavrin: mgavrin@gmail.com
Our current, amazing internship coordinator has told me that this will be her last year at NHA (this was a pre-retirement position for her after a long career as a social worker!). She may finish the year, or she's equally eager to help us find a replacement who can transition into the position sooner.
I'm reaching out to you all because the position requires a pretty unique skill set, so we may be more likely to find candidates through word-of-mouth than in a traditional posting.
Here are some of the qualifications we look for and factors we have to consider:
Equally adept at working with a wide range of teenagers and a wide range of adults in the community (potential internship hosts and Career Day speakers)
Match-making skills: internships are not only a match between job interest and job position, but also between intern and host
A wide network of folks to call on: someone too young or too new to New Haven may not know enough people to reach out to, or know enough about the community to know where to start to build new relationships
Educator mindset: not all of our students are equally "ready" for success on the job; our internship coordinator should be able to recognize students' potential and think in terms of activities that help students to become ready
One limiting factor is that this is a 19.5 hour / week position, at the NHPS pay rate, with no benefits, during the school year.
The position includes coordinating job exploration activities like Career Day, field trips, or workshop, but the bulk of the work is placing every junior in a 3-week internship in May. It's a very rewarding (and flexible) position for the right person!
If all of this brings anyone to mind, please feel free to share the information and/or pass names and contact information along to me. If you don't have specific folks in mind but know someone who might, let me know that too!
Thanks everybody,
Meredith
