TONIGHT! Music at Grand & East Pearl + New Haven Works + River Street Petition

[español sigue]

Dear neighbors,

Tonight marks Night 15 of our project to interrupt violence at the corner of Grand and East Pearl. We have filled this corner with beauty and community, including bomba with Movimiento Cultural, accordion by Adam Matlock, banjo by Jesse Cohen, opera by Daniel Juárez, hula hooping with Diamond Tree, Tarot readings with Melanie Gonzalez, Music Haven’s Haven String Quartet, clean ups, food distribution from Haven’s Harvest, a powerful march and rally led by Ice the Beef, a sukkah, and so many conversations and connections. Thank you to all who have shared your time and talents and helped transform this corner of our neighborhood. This Thursday September 30 marks the last night of this phase of our effort. Here are some of the artists and activities joining this week, between 6-8PM:

Tuesday 28th: Bethel AME Church Soloist Lisa Kellman

Wednesday 29th: Decorative Carving Demonstration

CLOSING! Thursday 30th: Central City Stompers Dixieland Band + Iglesia Para La Ciudad Singers

I am so excited about so much interest in the development of River Street. Unfortunately city officials have not coordinated the projects, and one project—Armada Brewing—goes before the Board of Zoning Appeals this week. If approved there, our community may lose another project—Jaigantic Studios. In the interest of jobs, an expanded tax base, and other potential benefits for our community, we need a mediated solution before there are any more approvals. The Fair Haven Community Management Team invites you to sign a petition requesting action: “we oppose granting a Special Exception to allow Armada Brewing to open a brewery and tasting room at 190 River Street at this time. However, we believe there is room for multiple businesses on River Street and the surrounding area. We therefore call on the City’s Department of Economic Development to engage the businesses that are interested in developing River Street in a mediation process to establish a solution beneficial to all.” Please sign here https://bit.ly/OurRiverStreet.

On Wednesday September 28 at 6pm, New Haven Works will gather via Zoom with major partners to provide information about employment and career opportunities for you, your family, and your community. New Haven Works staff will be available to answer questions about registration for orientation and New Haven Works membership. To participate, please REGISTER HERE

See you soon!

Estimados vecinos,

Hey Philip, my understanding is that this petition was put out by the FHCMT executive committee as an urgent item given the BZA scheduled for tomorrow. As in most organizations they are authorized to act on behalf of the body on time-sensitive matters between meetings. I have no objection to either brewery and neither does this petition, by my reading. I support mediation between the parties in order to maximize benefit to our community. Jaigantic is a large project and an unfamiliar concept for most of us - though the principals have implemented similar projects elsewhere and I believe it's worth taking seriously. EDA committed to mediation but has not moved on this. We need them to do so before projects get too far along, co-existence becomes unworkable, and we all lose out.

Hello,

I wanted to take a second and voice my concern with how this petition against Armada Brewery is playing out. As far as I know, there was no discussion or vote at the last FHCMT meeting about this petition to undermine Armada moving forward, and the petition is being represented as something the entire Fair Haven community / FHCMT agrees upon. If it was never brought up at a management team meeting giving people a chance to weigh in, then representing it as something that the whole neighborhood agrees upon feels incredibly disingenuous. Tabling a motion for a letter of support is one thing, but actively fighting to torpedo a living and breathing local business is another. Jaigantic doesn’t get to call ‘dibs’ on an entire neighborhood. If they wanted that parcel, or the parcel NEBCO is interested in, there are normal channels for them to acquire the land. I feel deeply uncomfortable with the amount deference the FHCMT is giving to the Jaigantic project, which feels like a unicorn to me, over both Armada and NEBCO, which are ready to move in. Will the FHCMT be leading a petition against NEBCO as well?

I appreciate you taking the time,
Best,
Philip Boulanger
