NEW HAVEN — Don’t let the cold and frost at Quinnipiac River Park fool you: Rebecca Kline is planting the seeds of public support there for a community farm that could feed 250 people someday.


Kline, director of the nonprofit group New Haven Farms, envisions fruit trees, berry bushes and rows of spinach, kale and cilantro — all on a 1.38-acre patch of park land behind the Brewery Square Apartments in Fair Haven.

“Oh, we’d grow tons and tons of cilantro,” Kline, 32, explains. “What would guide us is growing things that will give folks the most nutrients in the smallest space.”

But first she needs to grow some signatures.
After spending the past year talking with city officials and neighborhood groups, conducting soil tests and putting together an environmental assessment, New Haven Farms is ready to cultivate community involvement in an urban farm. To that end, Kline Wednesday met with about 40 neighborhood residents at the Mary Wade Home to gather signatures for a petition supporting a farm at the park...
