A developer submitted an initial proposal to the Historic District Commission for a single, large, combination residential rental and commercial building with 3 different facades. The problem some of us had was not just the size (67 units), but in the materials: plastic roof and facades with vinyl windows.
The developer had been consulting with some residents at the Turnbridge Condo on the other side of the bridge and Chris Ozyck, but new people showed up at the…

2018 Spring/Easter Festival Saturday, March 31st at 1:00 p.m. at Chatham Square Park

Pre-Spring Greetings to All,

We saw our first robin of the season this weekend and we know that means the annual CSNA Spring/Easter Festival is just around the corner.  The Festival will be held on Saturday, March 31st at 1:00 p.m. at Chatham Square Park.  It is a great opportunity for our diverse neighborhood to celebrate the end of winter and to welcome Spring.  The festival is in its 10th year and was started by the Janke family of Downing Street.  They moved…

Seeking an apartment (or a really special house)

Hi, my partner and I (she's a farmer/teacher, I'm a playwright/teacher) are looking to rent a 2 bedroom apartment (or 1 bedroom plus office) in Fair Haven or Fair Haven Heights. Ideally near the river or some nice trees. Eventually we'll want to buy a house here, so if you know of a special house, we could be persuaded to skip the apartment-renting step. Could move in anytime between March 1-July 1. References available, and I'll write you a poem about your house, pet, or tree. Contact…

Free Tax Filing through the New Haven VITA Coalition!

Individuals and families earning less than $54,000 a year are eligible for free tax preparation at over a dozen sites in New Haven...spread the word! Free VITA sites save filers an average of $200 and encourage people who don't think they need to file to see if they are eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit.

Regrettably, the Fair Haven site at the Columbus Academy on Blatchley isn't operating, but there are many others (I volunteer at the Emanuel Luthern site in East Rock, Sundays…

Mural Makes Over Vacant Former Strong School

Just off Grand Avenue, an African woman carries a bundled baby on her back, a purple cloth pressing up into her hair. A half-pigeon, half-dove with pink and blue-green wings flies above. Just a few feet to the left, an activist steps forward, bangled, purple fist slicing the air triumphantly. The Quinnipiac River bridge beckons behind her...…
