Hi, Terry , Its Rafael Ramos here is a letter i got from one of the candidates who i will be supporting as the democratic co-chair for the 14 th ward. i think that new haven rising mission and the content of his letter support each other. What do you think.

Dear Neighbor,

My name is Alberto Bustos and I write today to ask for your vote in the election for 14th Ward Alderman on February 22 at Atwater Senior Center.  I want to tell you a bit about myself and why I am running.

I am an immigrant to this great country and our wonderful city.  I came from Peru in 1981 seeking freedom of speech and opportunity.  One of the happiest days of my life is when I became a United States citizen.  I am also proud to be an immigrant and have spent much of my life both in my work and my volunteer efforts looking to bring together immigrants and the rest of the New Haven community.

I founded the first Hispanic newspaper in Connecticut: “Los Andes”.  Twenty years ago, I opened a business in New Haven called “Expresso Latino” which helps immigrants pay taxes, make travel arrangements and communicate with their home countries.  To bring people from across Greater New Haven together, I founded the New Haven Soccer League which is now over 20 years old and has 25 very diverse teams.  I also volunteer with a number of community and faith based groups.

Fair Haven and the 14th Ward are my home.  I love it here.  But like many of you, I know there are things that could be better.  And unfortunately, recently we have simply not been represented at the Board of Aldermen.  I am most concerned about the following issues:

  • Crime: Muggings, prostitution, and drug dealing make us all feel a bit less safe.  Working with the police department and listening to neighbors, we can move quickly to address known issues.
  • Traffic: We have too much speeding, and too many accidents or close calls.  While some improvements have been made through traffic calming, there is still a lot to do.    We need to work with the police and with the City Engineer to make our streets safe.
  • Arts & Culture: I want to work with the city to look at reusing Strong School for the arts and bringing more events to our parks.
  • Business: The Grand Avenue district is essential to the character of our neighborhood.  We need Grand Avenue to be clean, bright, safe and welcoming.
  • Youth & Community: We need city support for resources like Farnam, Junta and the library.

Welcome all the more. If you are so inclined post what you need in the blog section and we will get the word out to area residents to see if anyone has appliances they want to part with
