Event Description

In this hands-on woodworking workshop offered in celebration of Women’s History Month, participants will learn to craft their own custom wooden cutting board while exploring foundational woodworking skills in a supportive, femme-centered environment. Led by Akeera, this class is designed specifically for femme-identifying makers—welcoming women, trans women, nonbinary femmes, gender-expansive folks, and anyone who identifies with femme experience. Together, you’ll learn the essentials of working with wood while creating a beautiful, functional 10”x12” cutting board to take home.

What to Expect
Expect a guided introduction to woodworking with plenty of hands-on time. Akeera will demonstrate each step before participants try it themselves—from surfacing lumber to cutting, gluing, shaping, and finishing. You’ll work with essential shop tools including the planer, table saw, chop saw, and sander. After shaping your board, you’ll complete it with a food-safe mineral oil finish that highlights the natural grain. A scheduled lunch break will give everyone time to rest, recharge, and connect. All materials and safety gear are provided.
Skills You’ll Acquire
• Using core woodworking tools such as the planer, table saw, chop saw, and sander
• Cutting, shaping, and smoothing a cutting board blank
• Applying mineral oil for a durable, food-safe finish
• Understanding basic woodworking safety and workflow
What’s Provided
• Lumber for a 10” x 12” cutting board
• Access to all woodworking tools needed for the project
• Safety goggles and required protective equipment
• Step-by-step instruction from the instructor
Who Should Attend
This workshop is open exclusively to femme-identifying participants in honor of Women’s History Month. This includes women, trans women, nonbinary femmes, and other gender-expansive individuals who connect with femme identity. No woodworking experience is required—this class is ideal for complete beginners as well as those who prefer structured, supportive guidance.
Prerequisites/Safety Information
No prerequisites. Please wear closed-toe shoes, avoid loose jewelry and strings, and wear clothing that covers your arms and legs to minimize exposure to dust and debris. Safety goggles will be provided, though participants may bring their own if preferred. A lunch break will occur mid-session; lunch is not included, but there are many nearby options.
