Message from the Mayor: Requirement to Wear Masks In Stores

Today I issued an emergency order requiring people to use facemasks in essential retail businesses, including grocery stores, big-box stores, restaurants, pharmacies, gas stations, convenience stores, and package stores. The CDC strongly recommends that people wear cloth masks to protect others from contracting the virus. The order I issued also requires business owners to provide facemasks to all workers in these essential retail businesses. This order will go into effect this Friday morning.

You should not feel any need to purchase a mask–cloth masks can include the use of a towel, handkerchief, or other cloth covering. If you use the internet, there are a lot of great suggestions on how to make a mask online.

The City of New Haven now has 775 positive cases of COVID-19, with 19 untimely deaths. I send my deepest condolences to the families and friends of those we have lost. While this is a difficult time, your commitment to social distancing, staying home and wearing masks is already slowing the spread of the virus. Thank you for what you are doing. I encourage you all to stay home and stay safe.
