Climate change should be considered a new core aspect of creditworthiness when prospective home buyers apply for a mortgage, a new report suggests.

The analysis from the climate risk financial modeling firm First Street is a groundbreaking nationwide look at the ties between the growing risks from extreme weather such as floods and wildfires, and a long-suspected…

Fair Haven Cleans Up

John S. Martinez School “eco-warriors” Christian Ayapantecatl, Anthony Leon, and Giovanni Zurita walked up James Street’s tree belt, using long plastic “pickers” to grab pieces of paper, plastic, and chicken wing bones before throwing them into a large black trash bag.

They then walked over to stand alongside the mayor, four alders, and two dozen fellow students, city workers, and Fair Haven…

For any who may have missed it: Thanksgiving Arriveed Early In Fair Haven

A menu of pollo asado, arroz con gandules, and tres leches for dessert was the centerpiece of a joyous afternoon of gratitude, service, and community love in Fair Haven.

The scene was the annual pre-Thanksgiving lunch at the Atwater Senior Center, where about 100 older folks — regular clients of the five-day-a-week multi-service senior center on Atwater near Grand — were treated like honored holiday guests.

There was…

English Station Looms Over Fair Haven Walk

A derelict power plant. A neighborhood school. A vibrant community history of hardship and resilience. And the ticking clock of climate change.

All these elements came together in the first of a series of walking tours — a collaboration among several public and nonprofit entities put together by Anstress Farwell, president of the New Haven Urban Design League — focusing on the decommissioned and toxic English Station power plant and the Mill River District in Fair Haven...…

Quinnipiac Riverfest Brightens Fair Haven

The June sunlight sparkled off the smooth waters of the Quinnipiac River beside the Quinnipiac River Marina in Fair Haven, where people of all ages gathered to participate in the Quinnipiac Riverfest this Saturday.

A large stage dominated a corner of the area, surrounded by stalls for vendors, small businesses, and nonprofits. Beside the stage was a sign-up for kayak rentals, 15 minutes each. The community came together to celebrate local artists and businesses, as well as the culture…

Maria Teniza | January 3rd, 2024

In Mi Lupita’s warm Grand Avenue kitchen, 54-year-old Yolanda Guzman Elias and her sister Batriz Guzman Elias were making culinary magic, cutting fresh strawberries and slicing thin meat before a morning rush. The smell of dough hung low and thick in the air, wafting from the…

Atwater Thanksgiving Brings Fair Haven Together

by NORA GRACE-FLOOD | Nov 21, 2023

Fair Haven school kids filed into the Atwater Senior Center to keep their senior counterparts company in advance of Thanksgiving — and to dance cumbia with New Haveners like 73-year-old Yvonne Sheppard, who said the celebration was less a loneliness intervention than it was a special occasion among a vibrant city full of friends...…

Apetite Spot - Cositas Deliciosas

Bright, splashy greens, blues, pinks and purples declare the sweet treats to be found at Cositas Deliciosas: the ice cream, the shakes, the snow cones, the fresh fruit. But for me, it’s the savory regional Mexican dishes that speak loudest...…

“Grander” Grand Vision Lands $6M

The state has awarded $6 million towards overhauling Grand Avenue to make the bustling Fair Haven commercial corridor safer, cleaner, better-lit, and more pedestrian-friendly.

Those improvements can’t come soon enough for neighborhood stalwarts like Maria Ocotecatl of Grand Fish Market, and Javier Sanchez of Evolution Hair Studio, and Angeles Romero of Rodeo Groceries, and Ines Vidals of Dayvett’s Gifts, who have built up their small businesses because of their diverse and supportive…
