Help make New Haven a healthier city with more trees, for free

Help make New Haven a healthier city with more fresh air, cleaner water, and shade! We still have room in our planting schedule for more tree requests. Please spread the word to your friends and neighbors who live in New Haven that they can request a FREE street tree to be planted in front of their homes. There is no charge for the tree, only a commitment that the trees get watered after they are…

Recognition of what we have accomplished in our neighborhood

The Chatham Square area of New Haven reminds me of the first neighborhood that I grew up in (minus the hills we had in Asheville):  wood-frame, working-class houses, with some duplexes, on tree-lined streets.  Modest, yet architecturally sturdy and proud.  My old neighborhood has seen its ups and downs since back in the day, and so has Chatham Square...

It’s not charity– it’s community, says the founder of Benevolent

What good are GED classes if you can’t afford the glasses you need to study? How would it feel to search for work for a year and lose the job when your car breaks down during the first week? Cities and states across America have some form of job training and housing assistance programs, but they lack the infrastructure to address quickly, without onerous bureaucratic requirements, more immediate needs like work clothes, equipment, or even pots and pans...…

Why True Neighborhood Building Requires the Dedication of a Few 'Zealous Nuts'

We all have our own families, friends, and professional networks, and our own interests and hobbies that determine with whom we interact. Each of us is a member of many different communities that can extend over vast geographical areas. We might play on a team with people from across our city, have dear friends across the continent, and colleagues all over the world.

But there is something very unique about the neighborhood, and the role that we play as a neighbor within the… Continue

Think what we do has no impact on how our neighborhood is viewed by people who don't live here, think again...

As an outsider, and volunteer participant in the 2012 Riverfest I can only report excitement at the direction of this initiative. In a time when individuals and families seem to be drawing inward in fear of constant social unrest, here is a group of neighbors actively engaged in community building, both physical and social. The results are evident. This is real community revitalization, as opposed to expensive, top down,  politically mandated reform. This can do nothing but improve the New…
