Curb Unnecessary and Excessive Tree Trimming by Utility Companies

Connecticut Fund for the Environment's campaign to curb unnecessary and excessive tree trimming by Connecticut's utility companies is gaining momentum! The coalition to protect our local communities from ugly and environmentally devastating trimming practices is growing daily. But the threats to trees are growing too.

This week, we heard about aggressive tree destruction in Weston, and we're monitoring a council hearing in Ledyard. As we share our conservation plans and…

Your help needed to bring a Problem Property to the attention of the City

The issues are blight and vermin.

155/153 Lombard St has absentee landlords who are allowing their property to deteriorate. Racoons and squirrels have been seen coming in and out of the house, where they have built nests, causing health and safety issues. The shingles are falling off the house making it not only unsightly, but attracting vermin to make nests.

You can help by following this link: …

Illegal Fireworks

There's lots to love about living here, but as far as I'm concerned, illegal fireworks ain't among 'em.  I've started a petition to get them stopped, and I'd appreciate your support.  Here's what the petition says....

"Every year since at least 1988 we have had to endure the detonation of illegal fireworks throughout Fair Haven, Connecticut – nowhere more outrageously than on lower Grand Avenue.

Most recently, Friday, June 26, 2015, law-breakers discharged a number of…

Tree planting tomorrow - 5:30 - 51 Downing

Hi Chatham Square neighbors!

I posted a few weeks ago about the tree planting, lead remediation, and ways you can get involved with the Urban Resources Initiative's Greenspace this summer.

Our first planting day is tomorrow at 5:30 at 51 Downing.

If you missed our first meeting last week, it is definitely not too late to get involved. We plan to meet every Friday through the first week of August at 5:30.

If you put in some help with some street trees or a…

From Arroz Con Gandules To “Malta Goya!” - What the New Haven Indy says about food in our neighborhood

...Our first stop was Grand Apizza, a Fair Haven institution with several branches in neighboring towns. We all enjoyed slices of cheese, mushroom, pepperoni, and sausage pizza and learned the history of the place. I learned that this is where you get the ice cream sandwiches, too — actually, gelato sandwiches...

And it goes on from there. Read the entire article…

What if Marginalized Neighbourhoods Crafted Their Own Handmade, Place-based Economies?

From entrepreneurs in their 20s to established real estate developers, the diversity of people who joined the first few gatherings on neighbourhood economics in Cincinnati had an initiator of the effort, Peter Block, happily stunned.

Peter Block “The most excited people in some cases were the people who came in with the most responsibility — and they got it,” Peter says.

Christine Egger, who is supporting the…

Chatham Square Summer 2015 - Community Greenspace with the Urban Resources Iniative

People living around Chatham Square have been planting trees, cleaning up the park, removing dangerous lead from the soils in front yards - among countless other activities!! - with the Urban Resources Initiative (URI) since 1995, the year URI started. This is an impressive legacy.

We want to continue the work this year.

I'm Ross Bernet. A recent graduate from the Yale School of Forestry. I'm doing an internship with URI Greenspace this summer. I'm looking forward to working…
